Collingwood Mural

The Bag Ladies have completed raising funds for a mural for Collingwood

The fund raising is now complete.  Pub Charity have just advised that they will contribute $1600 to the project; Resene have agreed to sponsor some of the paint; ITM have agreed to provide the brushes and local businesses have provided the scaffolding and the Bag Ladies and the Golden Bay community has raised the rest.

The artist, Chris Finlayson is a professional mural designer/painter.  He creates the design and the outlines for the mural and then organises the community and the Collingwood Area School kids to do the actual painting. Painting starts mid-day on Sunday 15th April, and continued on for the next 4 weeks.

Once finished, the community will have a creative/cultural attraction in Collingwood that is a delight to both tourists and locals.  Its planned position alongside the wall of the Collingwood Café and its scale - 10 metres wide and 3 metres tall - will mean that everyone will see and enjoy it as they come into the town.

Proposed Mural
The 4 part mural will have a nostalgic feel, and will depict the early days in Collingwood - the original boat wharf, the old houses, the vintage cars driven at the time - and the enduring delight and freedom of childhood in a rugged coastal terrain, that still can be enjoyed today.  The mural will also demonstrate our achievement of being the 1st town in New Zealand to be plastic shopping bag free and encourage locals and tourists to care about their environment.
