The company's commitment to recycling programmes comes to life in-store with a variety of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle initiatives. As a result, Foodtown, Woolworths and Countdown supermarkets recycle hundreds of tonnes of plastic and more than 16,000 tonnes of cardboard every year.

The long-handles on the cotton calico bags mean you can carry them over your shoulder. They are washable and 100 per cent biodegradable and retail for $2.49.

The eco bags have a rigid bottom and shorter handles but can still comfortably fit items such as a two-litre soft drink bottle. These cost $1.99.

Pack 7 is another environmental programme underway at Foodtown, Woolworths and Countdown stores.  Pack 7 encourages checkout operators and customers to put up to seven items in each carry bag.
